Extractions

Tooth extraction involves removing one or more teeth from your mouth. There can be a range of reasons for needing a tooth extracted including:

  • decay
  • when your tooth is damaged beyond repair
  • when extensive gum disease has lead to the tooth loosening
  • orthodontic reasons
  • if you do not have enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth

The extraction procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, so while you will be conscious, the affected area will be numbed to reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Following the procedure, your dentist will apply pressure to the wound to stem bleeding. You will then be given an aftercare pack to take home with you. Details of our aftercare instructions can also be found here.

Bite Guards

Teeth Grinding or Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth. It can be exacerbated by high levels of anxiety or stress. Long term teeth grinding can cause damage to your teeth and can also cause teeth to become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids. Teeth grinding tends to be a subconscious behaviour done mainly while you sleep. This is why it is often your dentist that will first see the wear on your teeth and inform you about your grinding. Other signs are sore facial muscles, morning headaches and neck and ear pain.

To treat teeth grinding and clenching we recommend a bite guard which is a protective mouth guard made of plastic. These guards are worn while sleeping, and prevent the forces generated during night time teeth grinding from doing damage to your teeth. If you think you may grind your teeth and that a bite guard could help please discuss with your dentist.
